New Blog: Mel's Halloween All Year

I've been wanting to do this for ages: Mel's Halloween All Year. You can follow it in Google, or subscribe to it in a reader. From now on, I won't put full Halloween posts here, just make tiny announcements that there's new content over there.

Never too early

Mantle: Feb 14, 2009My mantle, 15 Feb. 2009

Oh my, yes. Some of my year 'round Halloween decorations are up! These are our David Frykman (resin) sculptures, which we started collecting after our first trip to Hell, MI, where we bought the little devil trick-or-treater. I think the library, with its red accent wall and black bookcases will become the room that always has Halloween decorations up!

Seen 'n Find Bottles
seek n find bottle for little onesI wanted to give a seek 'n find bottle to the daughter of some new friends, but she's a little 'un (~2 y.o.), so the printed card would not do.

Instead, I laid out the toys - on a sheet of paper - in a rectangular area and took a picture, which I printed and slid into a plastic sleeve. When I filled the bottle, I stopped a few inches down so there was more room for the rice to slide around, making the toys easier to find. A smaller bottle would have been better (the 1 liter size ends up being kind of heavy), but we didn't have anything with a large enough opening to fit all the toys through.

Showers of (Mail) Blessings

bacon bar packageEver since I heard about "bacon chocolate" I have been dying to try it. But I live in the boonies now, so I can't just pick up a bar. And, I'm watching my pennies anyway (not even buying yarn!), so I was content to leave it on my wish list* until finances improved. Well, yesterday, a package was on my doorstep from sweet woman named Allison, who also likes acorns. Inside was a Mo's Bacon Bar, plus some adorable wooden acorns and a hand-carved stamp. (I keep meaning to ask her if she made that herself.)

Let me tell you: it's certainly not for everyone, but whoa! I like it. I'm allowing myself just one square a day of the "deep milk chocolate" (between dark & milk) with salt and bacon.

tea from lesliedAlso, dear Leslie sent me some of my favorite caffeine fix tea: Christmas tea from Adagio, along with some paper filters (my mug). Those paper filters are excellent, if you like loose tea. After getting a box of them, I threw out my French press, which was a PiTA to clean after every cup of tea!

As if that wasn't enough, there was also a box of past issues of Martha Stewart Living magazine, including the 2008 issue (lost) and (if I read it right)the first October issue ever : 1991, plus a couple of the Halloween holiday issues (which I own, but are beat up). The sender isn't anonymous to me, but I'm keeping her identity quiet until I hear the word that it's okay to share.

*I love Amazon's universal wish list button! I'm tickled that a few surprises have come my way as a result, but the purpose was simply for me to keep track of things I spotted online and would want to buy someday. You know, if someone said, "Here is $100. You must spend it on yourself," I'd be ready. (I had that happen once, with a birthday gift, and had a really hard time!)

Speaking of wish lists and Halloween, if you're a Halloween fan, check out my list (in the side bar). I've found a couple cool new goodies that might be of interest.

Midweek Update

foggy day feb09I'm not the biggest fan of driving in the stuff, but oh, do I love a foggy morning! I took this on Tuesday morning, while there was a tiny bit of snow remaining to feed the fog. Things cleared up once I got a mile or so away, and the driving was fine after that point.

It did, indeed, put me in the mood for my fave holiday! I was able to get my Halloween links site back up this week, and have gone through the box of books, actually managing to pull out a few to pass on. I think my nephew will get a kick out of them - he benefits when I buy books that end up being too childish for my taste.

heigh ho for halloween bookA recent acquisition - 1948 ex-library book. It has little value as a party-planning resource (those parties I plan but never throw), but it's a nice little piece of history and fun to look through.

A little part of me is celebrating the demise of a particularly hateful group on a certain knitting/etc. forum I'm on. They're going on and on about freedom of speech and censorship, not understanding that those rights don't apply to private property, and not at all understanding the real reason they were axed.

It wasn't even the always-borderline racist (and other -ist) comments like this little gem. I'm not privy to inside info., but what's been said, simply, is that the mods couldn't (wouldn't?) moderate without supervision and that the group was too much work. They have NO idea how much slack they were given, because everyone I know would have booted the group months ago!

Lost & Found

I make this kind of post a lot, it seems!

nekkid guy stitch marker1Back when I did Ren Faires a lot, and made collections of favours (for people to pass out), I made some little guys like this to be a bonus for customers. I wanted to make more as stitch markers a few months ago, but could not find the box of stamps anywhere!

It actually made me quite sad, because I couldn't find a place to buy him online (nor could I remember the co. that made the stamp). When we were packing up stuff in the garage at the old house, I found a tote full of most of my stamps. Oh, so that's where they went! Right on top? Nekkid guy.

So, stitch markers have been made, and will hopefully be inserted into my Etsy shop (empty at the moment) later this week.

Making them with a gas oven instead of a tiny toaster oven was interesting. First thing that happened: they all flipped over and baked upside-down. Amazingly, I only lost 3 because of that. Next load from the old house will include my old toaster oven!!

Halloween Stuff
Y'all know I love Halloween the most, right? Well, after adding a bunch of books to my wish list, I set about making my first Listmania! List on Amazon: Grown-up Halloween. I know right where my box of Halloween books is, so I might be adding to it as I get that unpacked. Sadly, however, I can't recommend most of the books I own.

My Halloween links site is down right now, thanks to Comcast's so very smooth transition. They promised a seamless transition for movers. What did we get? They deleted all of our web accounts and content. I hope to be rebuilding it in the next few days.

We have Comcast to thank for the disappearance of the site. (So much for their "smooth transition" for movers!) I'm working on getting the space reactivated and the content restored.

Fun with Halloween

Once again, circumstances are conspiring against my celebration of Halloween. Based on when we started house-hunting and bidding on houses, there was a good chance we'd be moving around this time, so I didn't unpack anything and made no plans. Now we're still here, and once again, no Halloween celebration. It makes me sad, to be honest. It's like if you told Clark Griswold he couldn't put up Christmas lights. I keep telling myself, "someday..."

Last year, I was not in the mood (grieving). The year before, I think was the time that Dad got out of the hospital on Halloween. We have been trying to get some related activities in, so it's not like I'm entirely devoid of Halloween goodness. It's just never as much as I want to do. I don't think I'll be content until I have a house that I can entertain in, and throw at least a small dinner/movie party. I do plan to get the kids' goody bags done by this weekend so I can mail the ones I need. Turns out I didn't make them last year, which is annoying.

But, just because I don't get to have any fun, doesn't mean I can't share some good links for you to check out. Maybe y'all can have some fun for me!

Blogs to check out.
I actually have a "Halloween" category on my Bloglines! Some of these sites are from that list, others are more recent finds:

  • Pumkinrot
  • Season of Shadows (I recently won a contest here, but it's been on my bloglines for a couple of months now)
  • Dave Lowe blogs about all kinds of things, but in the days and weeks leading up to Halloween, shares tons of fabulous project (and his yard haunt props)

As Promised: Knitting and stuff

First, look at this fun nameplate:

You can monsterize your name here. Note: For me, saving the file didn't work. I could, however, copy it (right-click and "copy image") then paste it to a photo-editing app, finally saving it as a JPG. I know not everyone has Photoshop, but it would go into Paint just as easily.

Knitting Content!
I thought I was doing well for Christmas knitting. I really got into the mood several months ago and got pretty much everything done. The only thing remaining was a pair of socks for John, which I wasn't sure would be a Christmas gift or not, so I relaxed a little. Recently at least 2 more projects have come up, so I figured I'd better get started on John's socks!

Socks for Hub - Cuff doneI cast on Wednesday evening, during Pushing Daisies, using this gorgeous - yet manly - sock yarn from Nestucca Bay Yarns and US2½s (a size I ordered accidentally, but no longer regret, since 3s are a little too big and I didn't want to drop all the way to 2s).

I made really excellent progress - for me - and by Friday evening when John and I went out for dinner (more on that in a minute), I had finished the cuff and was working on the heel flap. (That little bit of "chain" is an emergency row counter made of a bunch of jump rings and a few buttons.)

About Friday... I wanted to hit the Cost Plus World Market to get some of those little salt & pepper shakers (bottom of this post), so we headed over there first. The store was closed! (Later, I checked online and found that there are only a couple of them left in the state. Sob.) We went to a nearby Big Boy for dinner. The waitress was a cheerful and chatty type, and - other than the company - was the only bright spot of the evening. The bun for John's burger had mold (!) on it, and my omelet was a mess (edible, but ugly). We were assured that the manager was horrified and would be by to talk to us, but no such luck. (The burger was replaced just before I finished my dinner.) I asked to speak with her and she pretended not to know what I was talking about, but I just kind of stared her down until she took the burger off the bill.

Socks for Hub - Into the GussetWhat you're looking at here is the sock as of this morning: the heel was turned (in teal, mostly because I'm not sure I'm going to have enough of the charcoal (will be doing the toe this way as well) and the gusset is done. Now I'm into the endless rounds of stockinette. Still - I'm really happy with how it's turning out. I'm really crossing my fingers on the size, and am planning a fitting this evening. According to the measurements, I should be knitting a size larger (would have to do some math for that), but according to the measurements, my feet should not be swimming in the socks I'm wearing right now.

I got quite a lot accomplished yesterday while we were out driving. First, we met up with Jdub for a little shopping. Then we headed out to the only World Market within driving distance (Ann Arbor!), so I could get a couple of those little salt & pepper shakers. Should have called ahead. They sold out a couple of weeks ago. Great. It wasn't a wasted trip, however; we'd planned on picking up a gift for a last-minute housewarming party we were heading to next. A couple of hours later, we were on our way home and I just collapsed. I feel my semi-annual bronchitis coming on. Hoping that I caught it in time -- I smell like Robitussin now, but if I can keep this nastiness from settling in my chest, I might be able to avoid the big coughs and wheezing that inevitably follow.

Ooga Booga Booga Booga

Re: Title -- I'm trying to remember a quote from Porky's II without watching it (love it, just not in the mood) ETA: Of course, John remembered it exactly. I'm declaring Halloween season on this blog. Not like I don't mention it whenever the mood strikes. So, mostly, I have a new header.

Anyway. Like the new header? I had 2 concepts and decided to combine them. The top font is "Dead Secretary." The orange cats, pumpkins and ghosts are Halloween noisemakers I got in Hell, MI last weekend. The ghost on the right is John. We have been known to, on occasion, dress up and take pictures in old, secluded graveyards. There isn't one of me that I like yet. He combined it with several elements he photographed, into this little masterpiece (reduced and watermarked):

We keep a nice framed print of it on the wall year 'round.

We're thinking about going to the big haunted house attraction in Pontiac next weekend. I don't generally "do" haunted houses. I'm afraid of the dark and claustrophobic. But John really wants to go and is prepared for me to be gripping his arm really tightly.

Yesterday, we went to the cider mill in Plymouth. We bought cider, took the tractor ride, and just enjoyed the day. I got a honey bear for my chamomile tea at work (and one for home). They have a little farm set-up there, but not a petting-zoo type place. The posted signs that read "Do not reach through fence, animals may nip" did not keep one woman near us from yelling to her kids: "Stick that grass through the fence. I want a picture!" Sigh.

Crappy Real Estate Broker News
Over two weeks now since the deal fell through, and no refund on our deposit. The guy won't even respond to our attorney. Upon the advice of a broker friend of Jdub's, I've documented the experience in detail (3 pages) and am mailing it to the head office tomorrow. The broker I spoke with was flabbergasted at just the few examples I gave him, and practically demanded that I file a complaint straight away, refund or not. Interestingly enough, Keller Williams doesn't have their mailing address anywhere on their site. (The bad agent is a franchise owner.) My Google-fu was strong yesterday (at about 2 AM), after I tracked down the name of an individual at corporate, then searched on her name, which led me to a professional networking site (similar to Linkd in, which I'm on) that listed the address for the corporate office.

I will probably post a copy of the letter, redacted of course, at some point in the future, but if you want to read it sooner, shoot me a note and I'll send a PDF. I'm not bragging, but those that do read it will see how I was told at one job that my writing skills made me dangerous, and how I was "laid off" a couple of weeks later. (Foolish man, my boss. Sat down one day to read a year's worth of reports to the board of directors. (I was required to send them one a month.) Gasp! I was reporting things as they actually occurred!) Nothing changed throughout a year of reports -- proof positive that the board wasn't reading them, either.)

'Tis the Season: Halloween Mags are Coming!

When I ran into the pharmacy today to pick up Sheldon's prescription, I paused in the magazine section to see if there were any new Halloween editions. I spotted this one and grabbed it right away. I like Matthew Mead's magazines, when I can find them (this is only the second one I've managed to find -- the first was a Holiday issue, for Christmas, which I wrote about on the old blog), so I bought it without flipping through it. It's a little pricey, at $11.99, so you might want to flip through it, or see my mini review, below. Unless you're like me, and just want to own Halloween mags. Then you'll buy it anyway. In my case, it's something I'll add to my collection, so I can justify it -- more like buying a book.

Note: after a quick scan, it's more of a book quality, but you will still find it with the magazines (so places like Borders won't honor %-off coupons, but places like Joann Fabrics and Michaels might (if they have them in stock)). There are several projects I'd like to try, so I definitely don't consider it a mistake to have purchased it without looking.

Once upon a time, the Matthew Mead Style website had lots of fun and clever ideas. It may still, but now it's subscription-based ($17.99 for 6 months), so I have no idea what's going on in there. (The only thing I pay an annual fee for is Flickr, and it's not likely to change.) The templates for the magazine are available without the subscription, though. I would have had to have a little fit, if they were referenced in the magazine but not available online without paying more, but there is no crisis here.

I used to be a kind of magazine addict. One day I realized that many of them were ridiculous, and I wasn't enjoying myself or finding much to inspire, and I pretty much stopped buying them. No fashion mags (wow, these pants are only $200!) or People. I will occasionally grab an MS Living, or decorating magazine (and I get Hallmark in the mail), but otherwise... they kind of leave me cold. But when October comes, I'm all over the magazines! MS Living is a must (I have maybe 11-12 years' worth), some special editions, like this one, etc. I do usually skip the women's magazines (Good Housekeeping, Better Homes and Gardens) year-round, including the October issues, but I will check out Mary Engelbreit Home Companion, Country Living, etc. I recently discovered Birds & Blooms magazine, and think I'll be subscribing to that.

Halloween Preparations and a Road Trip

Halloween says, "Ready or not, here I come!" Ninety-six days. 96. Start counting down now!

I say, I'd like to track down the Creative Memories consultant who urged me to crop my original (and only) copies of some pictures and kick her - hard - in the shin. I learned pretty quickly that it was a damn stupid thing to do, but at the expense of some favorite photos.

Anyway.

Most years, I put together Halloween goody bags for some of the children in my life. Some are related to me by blood, some by love. This year is no exception, but last year I wasn't so much in the mood, so it was a half-hearted effort. Which, hopefully, explains why I'm planning them now. I'm changing things up a little, because not all the kids seem to like getting the bags, so between now and then I'll be evaluating the list.

Last week, I ordered a few things from Oriental Trading. I'm not super impressed. I mean, I know it's cheap, bulk crap from China, but one set of items was so old that the labels - which had started out white - were translucent.

Yesterday, John surprised me with a little plan to do some house-hunting, followed with a stay at a hotel. We aren't looking that far away: it was just a way to do something different (sometimes the cats drive me crazy). We found a couple potential houses (not saying any more on the subject), and did a little shopping. John grabbed a couple boxes of Sour Apple Fizzies, and I found a Christmas present for nephew J (a fabulous snowman nightlight; his top hat is full of glitter and it acts like a bubble ornament when it warms up). At some point during the evening, I decided that I'd have to include Fizzies in the goody bags.

This afternoon, I checked online and found some for a reasonable price (compared to others), at a site I've done business with before. (Edited) I can't decide if I'm going to order a couple flavors of the 2-tab packs or full-size boxes. I have to wait until Sept. to order, since there are some melt-able items I want to get as well.

About the hotel. Well, I guess it was a motel. In almost every way, the place we stayed at was lovely. It was funny, when we went to the desk to ask for a room, they said, "Oh, all we have left are rooms with king-size beds and jacuzzis." Oh, shucks. We had a seriously yummy meal at a steakhouse (Logans?), checked in at the hotel, and took liberal advantage of the pool and hot tub. (I made myself take a bath in the jacuzzi tub, since we'd paid extra for it.) They even had a book case in the lobby with books to borrow. Nothing that interested me, but I liked seeing some children's titles there. Another nice thing: adult-only hour at the pool. We really appreciated that after the only child in the pool during our first attempt SPAT on John and almost landed on my head doing cannonballs. "We'll come back at 11."

Is there a law for motels that says that the mattresses have to be hard as a rock and the pillows so insubstantial that three isn't half enough? This morning, after a really restless night, I just wanted to be HOME. I told John that from now on, we're traveling with our own pillows. The awful mattress would have been endurable if we'd had pillows that didn't just keep getting smaller.

Halloween Library, and More!

halloween library1

A few weeks ago, I read this post on gee, that's swell, wherein Andi shared her Halloween library. I promised to do the same, and steal the credit (I'm obviously not doing that). I'd already indexed it and added comments, but hadn't photographed it for quite some time. So, this is my Halloween library!

There are 2 duplicates shown, but they don't actually exist anymore. One of my favorites is Halloween Crafts: Eerily Elegant Decor by Kasey Rogers. I love it so much, that when I thought I'd lost my copy, I immediately ordered another. While I was gathering all the books for the photo session, I glanced down into an open drawer, and there was my old copy! One of them went to live with Heather last weekend. I also had two copies of the 2007 Holiday: Halloween from Martha Stewart Living; I bought one for myself and then John surprised me with a copy. Someone on a Halloween discussion board spotted the duplicate and asked to purchase the spare. (As far as I'm concerned, I'm selling the copy I bought, and am keeping the one John got for me.)

My other faves:

* Give Them a Real Scare This Halloween by Joseph Pfeiffer
* A Halloween How-To: Costumes, Parties, Decorations, and Destinations by Lesley Pratt Bannatyne
* I can't believe I'm admitting this, but I still love Halloween: The Best of Martha Stewart Living, as well as the first Holiday (2000). From that same year ('00), the October Living was excellent. Starting with '01, there has been sporadic goodness in the Living and Holiday issues, but lots of repeats as well. I still buy whatever they put out (Halloween-wise), but have never been as delighted with anything as I was with that original trio.

Also good: Halloween Merrymaking: An Illustrated Celebration Of Fun, Food, And Frolics From Halloweens Past by Diane C. Arkins (lots of info. about Halloween between 1870-1930)

Quiet

Friday (the 4th) was a lot of fun. I finished my socks during the party and wore them the rest of the night. (I didn't knit the whole time!)

We didn't get home until 2:30 AM or so, and it took awhile to fall asleep, so Saturday was shot. I'm still a little tired, but I'm also feeling a little down, emotionally, so that might be the cause of the fatigue.

Charlie tried to kill me yesterday. Luckily, I was on the way up the stairs, instead of down, when he jumped under my feet and caused me to fall. That was before work. After I got to work, I locked my keys in my car (thank goodness for AAA Plus).

I'm deep into indexing my ever-growing collection of Halloween tunes, and compiling the lists for the mixes I want to do. I'm getting some ideas from Halloween Radio.

Oh, and I'm never flying again. ETA: Link removed b/c it wasn't true. The taser-bracelets exist, but no airline is considering them for passengers. Whew. It's sad that so many people (myself included) were willing to believe it, based on all the other measures that are being taken.

Haunted Juke Box

(I think there is actually a radio station with this name, but I thought it was a cool title. Bear with me.)

As mentioned previously (like, yesterday), I am in pursuit of a really excellent collection of Halloween music. I'm well on my way, but I'd love to get some suggestions. I need to make at least two different mixes, possibly three.

Mixes
1. Party mix. Not necessarily traditional; one of the songs on this list is Santana & Everlast's "Put Your Lights On."

2. Kid-friendly
2b. Kid-friendly with no rock n' roll or references to witches, etc. ("I put a spell on you" from the Hocus Pocus soundtrack would be right out.)

3. Vintage mix (I think I have this one covered with some of the downloads I got yesterday. (Some really excellent big band music, Louis Armstrong, etc., but more is better.))

Suggestions welcome! Think back to a Halloween party you've been to -- if you remember the music, what song really stood out? Is there a song you've thought should be in a Halloween mix? Share!

Maybe we can work out a swap later this summer, if anyone is interested. I can guarantee a drawing for one - or all - of the mixes I come up with, come September (my goal anyway).

Back to the drawing board
Well, crap. The super-cool earphones that I got over the weekend? Trigger dizzy spells for me right now. It could be b/c the Miniere's is acting up, so I'm holding onto them to test later. This sucks, because they were very comfortable! They were, however, really loud: inside the house (so not a lot of outside noise), the absolute lowest setting on my iPod (aka Olivia) is almost too loud.

Me & my Shadow

Except for Neo, who is John's baby, I am the other cats' favorite person. To be honest, I'm not sure why. John is way nicer to them than me.

Cass, pictured here, takes the devotion to extremes. There is an area on my "desk" (old gate leg table (I hate it)), to the right of my keyboard, that is hers. Before I switched to left-mousing, getting anything at all done was a chore; she would lay down, near my hand, then sprawl, stretching more and more, until I had to move the keyboard and mouse over. Then she'd shift again.

A couple of months ago, I got (what I thought was) a clever new mousepad with a calculator on the end. It didn't work out so well for me, but that's okay: it's Cass's spot now. The calculator part has to align with the edge of the table, and the mouse pad part must be kept completely clear. Once she starts doing the thing where she walks back & forth in front my monitor, I just have to tap the mousepad and she walks over to it and sits down. (Only if it's completely clear.) She still spreads out, but I've found that keeping a novel next to the keyboard keeps her from "helping" me type. As long as she's touching me, she's happy.

Halloween Music, Stories & More
For years, I've wanted to do a kick-ass CD mix as a Halloween party favor - or just a gifty to friends - but have never really gotten in gear. Well, thanks to this guy, I will have what I've always wanted! It's a great resource for sound effects and readings (like Christopher Lee reads the Exorcist). He's struggling to keep it all available, so if you find something you like, shoot him a couple of bucks, okay?

Halloweeny Tea Party

halloween bunting
Vanessa of A Fanciful Twist is throwing a virtual tea party (of the costume variety). Because I love Halloween, and dressing up for it (even if I'm always a witch (I'm on the right) or a vampire (tiny bit racy, you've been warned)), I decided that my party would be a Halloween-in-June costume party.

Charlie, George and Fred, Halloween '04Oh, good; you made it! Charlie (the kitty), Fred (his bony friend) and George the rat (don't worry -- he's rubber) were watching for you. Don't mind the creaking doors and thunder -- it's just a sound effects record. Let me get you some punch and ladyfingers!
Lucky Parcel -- Halloween (outgoing/wrapped)While this is a virtual party, a door prize/goody bag awaits a brave soul who makes it to the end and comments. Because I love me some comments and I love me some goody bags!

If you're not already viewing the whole entry, you can click on the picture or the link below to open up the whole thing.

teddy scare1You can't have a tea party without a teddy bear. Here's mine. His name is Mundy Drudge, we found him in Hell; he's had a rough life, but is living it up at our place now. At this very moment, he is not wearing any pants. I don't know why I think that's relevant, but there you have it.

Mundy goes with me on road trips, but otherwise hangs out in my sewing area. Lots of scissors and pins there. Just the way he likes things.

I was kind of kidding about the punch and ladyfingers. I do have refreshments, though: Piña Ghouladas (regular & virgin) and Eyeball Martinis.

Have a cupcake. Really, if you don't eat at least one, then I'll have to have two. Or three.

Munchies? If you eat candy corn and dry roasted peanuts together, they taste like a Payday candy bar.

I'm finally to the costume part of the costume party. I am dressed as an olde-tyme Renaissance witch/crone. Okay, I'm a wench with a witch hat. But it's a cool hat, yes? I overspent on it a little, so it will be part of any costume for many seasons to come.

Prior to the purchase of the fancy hat, I tried (within reason) to be "period" (historically accurate), but threw all caution to the wind after this. My best friend has the same hat, except in black, and we have all kinds of fun pushing the envelope. I added patches to my beloved but stained chartreuse skirt and made an apron with big pockets (for my knitting). Of course, when one is in one's home, entertaining guests at a costume party, one doesn't have to worry about silly things like accuracy. It's all about the party!

Thanks so much for coming to my party! I hope you had a good time. I'll be drawing from the comments for the door prize on Monday. I regret that I can only ship within the US & Canada. I will have to modify a package that goes overseas, okay? To make sure it's all legal.

Note: I don't know what it will like look yet - hopefully even cuter than the ones up top, which were for a swap last year.

The drawing is closed. I'll post the winner on Monday evening.
